A nonprofit preserving the Legacy of a Transatlantic Icon, the RMS Queen Mary; through restoration initiatives and education

Preserving
An Ocean Liner
Our Mission:
The Queen Mary Heritage Foundation is a nonprofit dedicated to the restoration and conservation of the RMS Queen Mary. Since 2014, we’ve worked alongside preservation experts and ship historians to identify, fund, and complete critical projects onboard.
Our focus is simple: protect the ship’s legacy with integrity, craftsmanship, and care, ensuring this one-of-a-kind icon continues to inspire future generations.

Our Latest Project
The Restoration of the Gesso Panel, Unicorns In Battle, onboard Queen Mary
Located in the ship’s First-Class Lounge, Unicorns in Battle is one of the Queen Mary’s most captivating murals. Designed by Alfred J. Oakley and Gilbert Bayes in 1936, this 37-foot-long masterpiece depicts the triumph of good over evil through allegorical unicorns, woven into a mythological tableau rich in symbolism and drama.
Over time, the mural suffered from fading, surface damage, and exposure-related deterioration. Thanks to donor support, the Queen Mary Heritage Foundation funded one-third of its restoration, allowing conservators to carefully clean, stabilize, re-guild and revive this extraordinary work of art.

A Ship Like No Other
The Enduring Legacy of the RMS Queen Mary
Launched in 1934, the RMS Queen Mary is one of the most significant ocean liners ever built; a triumph of British engineering, Art Deco design, and maritime history. She carried celebrities, statesmen, and soldiers across the Atlantic, serving both as a luxury liner in peacetime and a troopship during World War II.
Retired to Long Beach in 1967, she remains the last survivor of the golden age of transatlantic travel. Today, the Queen Mary stands not only as a floating museum but as a symbol of innovation, endurance, and cultural legacy.
