QUEEN MARY HERITAGE
FOUNDATION
Our Mission:
The Queen Mary Heritage Foundation is dedicated to preserving and restoring the RMS Queen Mary’s historic spaces, collections, and legacy. In partnership with the City of Long Beach, we raise funds to support City-approved restoration projects and to expand educational access--helping students and the public experience the ship with learning opportunities that highlight her history, design, and cultural significance.

Our Latest Project
The Restoration of the oil on gold leaf painting, Madonna of the Atlantic in the First Class Drawing Room
The Madonna of the Atlantic was created as a focal point for the Queen Mary’s First Class chapel, offering a moment of reflection within the broader spectacle of the ship’s interiors. Executed in gold leaf, the painting draws from traditional religious iconography while reflecting Cunard’s refined, carefully curated aesthetic. It served not only as a work of art, but as a source of reassurance for passengers crossing the Atlantic, grounding the experience in something steady and familiar.
Over decades of service, wartime conversion, and subsequent years as a stationary attraction, the painting experienced gradual deterioration. Accumulations of dust and debris, areas of surface loss, and instability along the canvas edges have affected its condition. Residue along the perimeter and scuffing within the gold leaf have further diminished its visual clarity, obscuring the luminosity and detail that originally defined the work.

A Ship Like No Other
The Enduring Legacy of the RMS Queen Mary
Launched in 1934, the RMS Queen Mary is one of the most significant ocean liners ever built; a triumph of British engineering, Art Deco design, and maritime history. She carried celebrities, statesmen, and soldiers across the Atlantic, serving both as a luxury liner in peacetime and a troopship during World War II.
Retired to Long Beach in 1967, she remains the last survivor of the golden age of transatlantic travel. Today, the Queen Mary stands not only as a floating museum but as a symbol of innovation, endurance, and cultural legacy.

The Queen Mary Heritage Foundation is proud to be the City of Long Beach’s nonprofit partner in the restoration & preservation of the ship.
